What's In It For You With Liposomal Clodronate Therapy

By Teri Farley

Liposomal clodronate is a new form of treatment for autoimmune diseases as well as prevention of transplant rejection. It is used to deplete macrophages, thus suppressing immune activity which at present may be heightened for people having an autoimmune disease or those who just came out from transplant surgery.

The immune system is one of the most important system of the body specifically to one's health. In fact, some people take vitamin supplements to aid their immune system. The stronger it is, the more invincible man becomes. It's all very simple if you think of it, however this may not always be the case sometimes, there are abnormalities in your immune system which causes your cells to attach your own body, hence the term Autoimmune Disease.

The immune system has an important role in a man's health. Under normal circumstances, the immune system defends the body from foreign cells which may cause infection such as common cough and colds. In addition to that, it may also send off several defensive mechanisms in the body perhaps to prevent additional trauma.

Clodronic acids is a first generation biphosphonate was originally used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of hyperparathyroidism, vertebral fractures, fracture related pain and hypercalcemia. It was during this time that the drug was discovered to have an effect in the immune system by reducing certain inflammatory markers.

Clodronic acid liposome therapy, targets the macrophages to efficiently halt the attack of healthy cells. Suppressing your macrophages will slow down inflammation thus decreasing the pace of disease progression. Some autoimmune diseases have life threatening effect when not intervened properly, for an instance in myasthenia gravis.

Autoimmune diseases are medical conditions caused by the immune system itself. Macrophages, the core cell of the immune system, attack healthy cells causing inflammation such as those in multiple sclerosis, pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and so on. During transplant, macrophages may also attack the new cells coming from the graft causing the body to reject it.

The mechanism of action on such therapy by far remains to be the most promising form treatment. Immune system suppression is not a new patient management or treatment for certain medical diseases, there have been several oral, parenteral or intravenous drugs were already made to achieve similar results. But some patients remain unresponsive.

Additionally, transplant rejection will be prevented perhaps improving the patient's quality of life. With cancer, clodronic acid showed promising results in improving the action of anti tumor drugs by increasing its level of plasma absorption. Cancer is a strong disease to fight and it needs the patient to be very responsive to his treatment to achieve good results. Clodronic acid does not cure cancer but rather, pose as a good conjunctive therapy for anti tumor or antineoplastic drugs.

Liposomal clodronate was also discovered to have therapeutic effects in conjunction with anti tumor drugs used in Cancer. Clodronic acid is said to improve the drug absorption of antineoplastic drugs as well as demonstrated the possibility of slowing down cancer growth however, this mode of action is yet to be proved. The combination of decreasing blood vessel density and tumor size shows great promise.
