Make Your Horse Look His Best With Horse Bling

By Antoinette Quinn

Those who love their horses can now dress them up with as much bling as they can afford. All riders from professionals to Pony Club members like to have their horses looking as attractive as possible. Those who ride in parades need to be eye-catching and horse bling helps them do this. Decorative bridles and breastplates have been around for a long time but embellishments have now extended to hooves, bell-boots, manes, tails and quarters.

Equine body stickers are a relatively new product. You can choose from skull and crossbones to stars, flowers, crown, hearts and cupcakes. Body stickers can be altered depending on the gear your horse is wearing. School colours, ranch brands and company logos can be etched in gemstones to make a very appealing design.

Body stickers are non-toxic and self-adhesive. They take no time at all to apply. The design is simply removed from the paper and placed wherever you desire. Apply to a clean, dry coat. In summer, the design should remain in place for two to four days. In winter, five to ten days is more usual. To remove, simply peel off the design in the direction of the hair.

Bell-boots allow a variety of colours and designs. All sizes are available and are machine-washable. The range of colours includes pink, navy blue, red, black, olive green and burgundy. Hand-painted designs are enhanced with gemstones. You will see these body embellishments at rodeo events, local gymkhanas, barrel-racing and Pony Club. Team events are an ideal excuse to match decorations with your fellow team-members.

Perhaps you prefer dressage or showing to Western events. You can still add decorations and a certain amount of bling. When choosing browbands, pick a style and colour to enhance the head of your mount. V-shaped browbands flatter most heads and add class to a bridle. Those composed of a 5-row crystal chain look very impressive. Choose from silver or gold. A mix of coloured ribbon and crystal chain gives added glamour. Custom browbands can be made to incorporate the name of your horse.

The ends of the browbands may be finished with rosettes and short trimmed ribbons featuring the same colours as the band. Another option is a carnation. Red and silver browbands with carnation ends look very elegant on grey horses. Breastplates and stirrup leathers are other items suitable for ornamentation.

Custom-made canes add panache and style. Crystal chain wrapped over a velvet base is very eye-catching. An equally dramatic effect is created by covering the entire cane in crystals. These are often finished with crystal ornamentation. Add matching stock pins and lapel buttons for an overall finished effect.

Glitter gel and stencils allow riders to create their own body patterns and designs. Glitter can be used on tails and manes. If you support a particular charity, consider stencilling awareness ribbons in the colour of your charity on the horse's quarters. Hoof polish is available in either a satin or glitter finish. White markings are enhanced with white chrome. Eye and muzzle oil is available in glitter. Those who love their horses will be thrilled to receive a gift pack of horse bling.
